Certifications & Labels

Building material certifications are third-party standards that verify specific claims about a product, whether that’s low chemical emissions (GREENGUARD), sustainable forestry practices (FSC, PEFC), or full ingredient transparency (Declare Label). They exist because “natural” and “eco-friendly” are marketing terms with no legal definition. A certification gives you something verifiable. Not all certifications test the same things, and none of them tell the whole story on their own. GREENGUARD tests what a product emits into the air. Cradle to Cradle looks at the full material lifecycle. An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) quantifies carbon footprint but says nothing about indoor health. Knowing which standard applies to your concern helps you read labels with more confidence.

Reading Labels walks through the most common certifications you’ll encounter. VOCs: The Invisible Presence explains the chemistry behind emission testing. And Making Choices puts certifications in context alongside the other factors that shape a purchasing decision.
